Join photographer Yannick Lowery and Gravy Studio for an exploration into the cyanotype processes. Recognizable as the blue in the traditional blueprint architectural drawing, this non toxic historic technique produces a monochromatic print of Prussian Blue using iron salts exposed to UV rays. Yannick will teach you about how to get started using this unique process. Including using digital negatives to produce creative compositions as well as how to print using a UV light source. By the end of this hands on workshop you’ll have the skills to create your own cyanotypes and to apply this technique to your own creative practice.
Yannick Lowery is an interdisciplinary artist currently working in Philadelphia, PA. Originally from New York City, he embraces both cities as cultural and creative influences, drawing on their rich and diverse visual art histories to fuel his practice. Yannick studied sculpture and graphic design at The Atlanta College of Art (now SCAD) and Columbia College in Chicago.
Yannick’s work often weaves together illustrated proverbs, premonitions, and historical references to guide viewers through cultural introspection and imaginative narratives. Using archival imagery and his own photography, he engages in world-building through collage, animation, cyanotypes, and sculptural pieces, creating thought-provoking and exploratory works.
Gravy Studio + Gallery started in 2011 by Drexel photography program alumni Emma Stern, Katie Tackman, and Benjamin Riley in a motorcycle warehouse space in Fishtown. Over the years, Gravy has grown with the help of over 15 members dedicating their time in 4 different locations. We serve as a multi-functional space that promotes the discussion and advancement of photography as an art form. As one of the only photography-based galleries in Philadelphia, we support local photographers through gallery exhibitions, events, artist talks, and workshops. We are an artist-owned gallery collective which fosters an equal dialogue between curator and artist. We strive to connect with the community through open dialogue about social, political, and artistic ideas filtered through the lens of photography.
Exhibits have ranged from traditional matted fine art prints in simple black frames to Xeroxed prints turned into wallpaper. Many of our artists shoot film, use alternative processes, print on unique substrates, and use projection to transform their images. Other exhibits include creating custom zines on demand, photos paired with custom music tracks, tintypes, and photos with silk graffiti. We also choose artists who can show unique perspectives on social issues and current events including the 2016 election, immigrant and refugee culture, fair trade food, the Philadelphia school system, and environmental issues. Almost all of our events are free and open to the community which is an important part of connecting and sharing our love for photography. The rest is Gravy!
We started out 2020 in a new space and a new vision. Always searching for different ways to connect with photographers and our audience. In 2023, we gave up our physical space and shifted our focus to creating a blog to share work and hosting one or two pop up exhibitions a year. We will also co-organizers and participants in the 20/20 Photography Festival here in Philadelphia.
